Thames & Kosmos was started by Jane Holdsworth in 2001; her mission was to improve informal science education outside of the classroom by creating high-quality science and technology related educational products for children of all ages. Now run by her son Ted, The emphasis of Thames and Kosmos kits is to teach kids scientific concepts and skills through hands-on modelling of devices and processes used by adults in the real world and supplementing this by including comprehensive, meaningful and engaging reading materials for a rich learning experience. T&K grew out of Kosmos, its partner company in Germany, an old publishing house that has been creating Science Kits for Kids for nearly 200 years, with Thames adding the translation and rewriting into the English language. T&K has also started to design its own new science kits in 2005. The UK branch was set up in 2010 to meet demand from UK and Europe.
