🎯Aim of the game: To be the first player to complete their pyramid with all 10 monkey
playing pieces.
Set-up: Each player chooses a board and places it in front of them, together with the bag in the same colour. The players then take 1 purple monkey playing piece and 1 white monkey playing piece each, as well as the 10 monkey playing pieces in the same colour as their board. They put all of their playing pieces (12 in total: 10 + 1 + 1) in their bag and mix them up.
▶How to play: The youngest player starts, to be followed by the other players in turn
in clockwise order.
When it is their turn, the player has to complete the following steps:
- Put their hand in the bag and mix the monkey playing pieces up without looking at them.
- Pick 1 monkey playing piece at random and take it out of the bag.
If the monkey piece is in the player’s colour, that’s great! They might get a chance
to make their pyramid a little taller! The player puts the monkey drawn down in front
of them and decides whether to end their turn or draw another monkey.
- If they decide to draw another monkey, the player puts their hand back in their bag, mixes the pieces up without looking, and draws a new monkey. They check the colour of the monkey. If it is in the player’s colour, they can decide to keep going or stop. If it is a purple or white monkey, the consequences described below apply.
Please note: A player may draw a maximum of 3 monkeys per turn. Once a
player has drawn 3 monkeys in their own colour, they have to end their turn
-
If they decide to end their turn (or if they have already drawn 3 monkeys in their
colour), the player takes the monkeys drawn during that turn and puts them on
their board to build their pyramid.
If the monkey is purple, bad luck! The purple monkey is a grumpy one and sends everyone back into the bag! The player puts the purple monkey back into their bag, along with any monkeys in their own colour that have been drawn during that turn. The player’s turn ends and play passes to the next player.
If the monkey is white, oh dear! The white monkey is a trickster. It forces the others
back into the bag but wants to try its luck elsewhere! The player puts any monkeys
drawn during that turn in their own colour back into their bag. They give the white
monkey to the player of their choice, who has to add it to their bag immediately.
The player’s turn ends and play passes to the next player.
To build their pyramid, each player has to place the first 4 monkeys on the 4 squares on their board. The next 3 are then added on top in a staggered row, after which the next 2 are added on top in a staggered row. The last monkey is placed at the very top of the pyramid.
🏆End of the game: As soon as a player has added their last (the
tenth) monkey to their pyramid, they are the winner.
